The Geriatric Visit Bank
-  a source for  interchange of ideas

The aims of the EUGMS are, among others, to develop geriatric medicine in Europe and to support the effort of making professional, geriatric services available to all European citizens. One way to do this is to facilitate the contact between fellow European geriatricians. The EUGMS has therefore established a Geriatric Visit Bank, which contains profiles of geriatric departments in Europe. Through this bank, geriatricians can find departments in Europe that are organized in the same way as their own, or which have a structure that they may like their own department to develop. The basic idea is that if geriatricians meet and talk, new ideas may be created of how to meet the future demographic challenges of the increasing “geriatric load” on the health care system. Despite major institutional differences between the European countries, we may be able to learn from each other and to pick up new ideas that can be applied in our own geriatric framework.

The Geriatric Visit Bank contains department profiles of geriatric departments throughout Europe, addresses and names of contact persons. All geriatric departments are welcome to have their department data entered in the Geriatric Visit Bank. Departments already registered in the bank are those who responded to a general request in 2006, and the bank comprises presently more than 40 geriatric departments throughout Europe. The goal is to have at least three departments of each country represented in the bank – and more would be welcome.

The General rules of the EUGMS Visit Bank

There are no financial obligations on the part of the hosting geriatric department. All travel and accommodation expenses are to be paid by the visiting part. The only obligation is that you can only visit another department if your department is willing to be a host.
