Prof. Mirko Petrovic

 

Mirko Petrovic specialized in internal medicine and geriatrics at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Ghent University. He is certificated in clinical pharmacology by the Dutch Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmacy.


He is a head of clinic at the Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Service of Internal Medicine, Ghent University Hospital.

Moreover, he is a Full Professor of geriatrics and clinical pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Ghent University and a Visiting Professor of geriatrics at the University College Ghent, Belgium.

The main aims of his research line are: to outline the pattern and quality of drug utilisation in older in-patients and patients residing in nursing homes; to assess the quality of prescribing and to estimate to what extent the prescriptions are tailored to real medical needs; to assess to what extent the organisation of an institution influences the relationship between drug utilisation and medical needs; to use prescribing indicators for identification of prescribing which is not in line with national and regional prescribing guidelines and to contribute to the organisation and implementation of a better prescribing policy in older people. His scientific record illustrates extensive experience both in performing epidemiological studies and clinicaltrials.


He is the only geriatrician in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium with the background and certificate of clinical pharmacology and the member of the EMA (European Medicine Agency) Geriatric Expert Group.

In addition, he is a member of the Belgian Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics, Dutch Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmacy, European Academy for Medicine of Ageing (EAMA) and European Union Geriatric Medicine Society
(EUGMS).

He won the Award of the Belgian Foundation for Psychogeriatrics (2003) and the GerontoNet (a network of excellence for clinical trials with geriatric patients) grant (2008).

He is an author of various book chapters and peer-review publications mainly in the field of drug-related problems in old subjects and psychogeriatrics, a co-author and a co-editor of different books, a promoter of several dissertations and Ph.D. theses, and a reviewer of a number of international peer-reviewed journals. Currently he participates in two ongoing FP7
projects of the European Commission.
