EuGMS Young Geriatricians Initiative (YGI) - New Blog!!

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We are the Young Geriatricians Initiative group (YGI) - a brand new group within the EuGMS, which aims to unite young specialists and allied healthcare professionals (AHPs) all over Europe and create an international network. You can find out more about YGI here. We will be launching A NEW BLOG at the upcoming EuGMS 2020 E-Congress on 7-9 of October.

CALL FOR CONTENTS

We invite young geriatricians, allied health professionals, ageing researchers and anyone with an interest in Geriatric Medicine and the care of older people, to contribute to the blog with a short contribution (up to 300 words) and share your personal experience/thoughts on the above-mentioned topics. We are also open to more senior contributors to the blog, especially if you have something to share that is relevant to more junior and trainee members!
The main topics of the blog will be:

GERIATRIC MEDICINE’S ATTRACTIVENESS AND CHALLENGES
It could be your testimony on why you chose geriatrics or what aspect you enjoy the most about practicing geriatric medicine and why, or even what are the most challenging aspects of this specialty? Another example might be what would you say to somebody who asked you some career advice and why it is worth doing geriatrics? How would you positively “advertise” geriatric medicine? Maybe a chronicle of your everyday practice in geriatrics could be interesting for readers or a small article sharing your point of view! These are only some ideas, please feel free to express yourself.

EXPERIENCES OF JUNIOR GERIATRICIANS AND AHPS ACROSS EUROPE – WHAT IS WORKING LIFE LIKE IN YOUR COUNTRY?
What about sharing experiences and discussing challenges of practicing Geriatric Medicine in different contexts across Europe? Maybe you would like to write a chronicle or a short report about success stories? For example, actions, structures and activities at a local level that could possibly interest other junior geriatricians and allied healthcare professionals working with older people from other countries? You could also discuss differences and particularities in geriatric medicine, gaps in curricula and healthcare services for older people in different countries or even share information on opportunities for international educational experiences. Wouldn’t it be great we could open up a network, collaborations and joint activities as Young Geriatricians and allied healthcare professionals across Europe, stemming from this blog?

RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY WITHIN GERIATRIC MEDICINE
Some examples (only indicative but not exhaustive!) would be: what do you find exciting in the field of geriatric research currently? What direction do you think that geriatric research is going? What topics and issues do you think researchers should focus on? What sort of technology can you imagine in geriatric practice now and in the future? Are there any interesting projects you are aware of that you would like to share? Have you seen examples of ageism within research? How can we tackle this? What are your concerns/hesitations about doing research with older people? Maybe you would like to share some tips and challenges on how to start a research career, applying for fellowships, undertaking a PhD and so on?

REVOLUTIONARY IDEAS! SHARE YOUR “CRAZY” IDEAS/VISIONS/DREAMS ON THE FUTURE OF GERIATRICS WITH THE EuGMS COMMUNITY
Some examples only to trigger your imagination (but not to constrain it!) would be: How do you think we could promote Geriatric Medicine as a specialty? How can we communicate its attractiveness and highlight its added value? How can we become more effective and at the same time more compassionate, more person-centered? How can we get policy makers more interested in the care of older people? How can we contribute to the elimination of the stigma of old age? How can we really achieve healthy aging and fight against discrepancies in access to healthy aging opportunities? Any “crazy” research idea you would like to share? How can we revolutionize geriatric medicine in the future? Just feel free to express yourself!
