The world health organisation has proclaimed 2021-2030 the Decade of the United Nations for Healthy Aging. It is a global collaboration that puts the elderly in the centre of a plan that involves governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, universities, media, and the private sector, in order to improve life for the elderly, their families and the communities they live in.
The populations of the whole world are aging faster compared to the past, and this demographic transition has an impact on multiple levels of society. There are more than 1 billion people of an age equal to or greater than 60 years old, the majority of whom live in countries with low or medium income. Many do not have access to the basic resources necessary for a decent life. Others face numerous barriers that prevent their full participation in society. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the severity of the gaps existing in politics, systems, and services.
For this reason, it is important that the Decade of Healthy Aging brings about a change in the way we think and act towards age and aging; to promote the abilities of elderly people; to supply integrated cures centred on the individual and the basic health services for the elderly; to supply access to long term assistance, in the communities that we live in.
Since the 80s the Fondazione Ferrero has been conducting a vast program of health and social care for the “Ferrero elderly”, who are current and retired employees with at least 25 years of activity in the company, this health and social care is articulated in multiple actions: the promotion of physical activity, with courses aimed towards preventing and fighting typical pathologies of aging, health monitoring with acts of support (periodical visits, exam bookings, accompaniment, etc.) at clinical institutes and other health and rehabilitative structures, supply of multiple services of volunteering and social, cultural and scientific initiatives. The work of the Fondazione aims to ensure that all elderly people can fulfil their potential with dignity and equality in a healthy environment.
From a wealth of experience, since 2013, the Fondazione has organized conferences every two years of international stature to promote reflections on changing demographics and the resulting social downfall, promoting a model in which the senior world is seen as a positive resource and as a chance for new experiences. In the centre of the scientific debate, the best clinical and social strategies to transform old age into a resource for the community.
