Delirium
Leader: Alessandro Morandi Suzanne Timmons
The main objective of the SIG on Delirium is to support and facilitate the clinical detection, assessment, prevention and treatment of delirium in older persons across European countries.
The group will specifically generate actions aimed at:
- Developing possibilities for physicians to improve detection of delirium or increased risk of delirium in hospitalized older persons;
- Designing dedicated clinical pathways for recognizing and treat the underlying causes of delirium in older persons and long termlong-term consequences;
- Implementing clinical interventions aimed at preventing the onset of delirium in older persons (especially after surgery);
- Building structured follow-up methodologies to monitor the effectiveness of the implemented interventions to prevent and treat delirium and the evolution of the health status, including cognition and physical function, in those who suffered from this condition.
Short-term outcomes
- A web-based survey to describe the methods to assess delirium in different settings of care (hospital medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation, nursing homes, hospice, etc.) across European countries.
- A web-based survey to describe the approaches to prevent and treat delirium in different settings of care (hospital medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation, nursing homes, hospice, etc.) across European countries.
- To evaluate pharmacological treatment options across European countries.
Long-term outcomes
- Developing a network of researchers and clinicians to improve collaboration and interacting activities also in order to compete for European projects focusing on delirium. The SIG is looking for people with expertise and interest in the field of delirium to join the group.
- Organizing one or more studies to assess the prevalence of delirium in different settings and describe the practices to manage it among the acute geriatric wards across Europe
- Harmonizing the methods to detect, diagnose, prevent and treat delirium in older patients admitted to hospital wards and other settings of care
Results of the surveys will be object of scientific publications. The SIG is also aiming to submit a symposium on delirium within the 2019 EuGMS congress in Krakow.
